Hoag Orthopedics hosted our inaugural Orthopaedic Fellowship Research Day on Friday, July 15th, 2016. Attendees had the opportunity to hear from Distinguished Visiting Professor Dr. Ryan M. Nunley, Associate Professor of Washington University School of Medicine St. Louis, Missouri, who is regularly featured on the, “Best Doctors in America” list. Each Hoag Orthopedic Fellow, along with guest fellows from Kaiser Permanente and The Sports Clinic, also presented some of their most interesting cases from their year of training and the research projects they completed during the year.

Event Description:

We are pleased to have Dr. Ryan N. Nunley, Associate Professor, Washington University School of Medicine of St. Louis, Missouri, as this year’s Hoag Orthopedic Distinguished Visiting Professor. Join us as our graduating Fellows deliver special case reviews and presentations on their work and research investigations to their peers, attending surgeons, and our guest speaker. Dr. Nunley will also deliver a presentation on his own on, “Comprehensive Care of the Hip Patient from Arthroscopy to Arthroplasty”.

This symposium will be held at Hoag Orthopedic Institute, at 16250 Sand Canyon Avenue, Irvine, Ca 92618, in the Auditorium. Sign in will begin at 6:30am, with breakfast available. The program will conclude at approximately 10:00am.

Accreditation

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Compare the options for hip preservation surgery and compare the options for hip replacement surgery.
  2. Improve patient selection and techniques for arthroscopic repair and guide indications for open stabilization and/or bony augmentation.
  3. Determine accuracy and precision of acetabular component position using the anterior approach with intraoperative fluoroscopy, anatomic landmarks, and stability testing.
  4. Compare the early and immediate outcomes of direct anterior total hip arthroplasty.
  5. Compare infection rates between different means of sterilization of spinal implants.
  6. Articulate potential cost-related concerns between sterilization means.
  7. Integrate this information to benefit cost-efficiency with regard to spine surgery.
  8. Assess and appreciate the successes and challenges of implementing an enhanced recovery protocol.
  9. Prescribe an appropriate number of narcotics for managing postoperative pain following a total hip and total knee arthroplasty.
