On Friday, June 25th, Hoag Orthopedics hosted our virtual 6th Annual Orthopedic Fellowship Research Day lead by Course Director Dr. Nader Nassif of Hoag Orthopedic Institute. Over 100 attendees heard from Distinguished Visiting Professor Dr. William Barrett, Medical Director of the Joint Center at Valley Medical Center. Dr. Barrett delivered an engaging presentation, “Total Knee Arthroplasty Alignment, Robots and Lesson Learned,” recognizing the evolution of total knee arthroplasty design and surgical techniques over the last four decades as well as appreciating the potential benefits of robotic assisted total knee arthroplasty. Our graduating fellows gave special case reviews and presentations of their own work and research investigations to their peers, attending surgeons, and our guest speaker.

Event Description:

We are delighted to have Dr. William P. Barrett, Medical Director of the Joint Center at Valley Medical Center as this year’s Distinguished Visiting Professor. Join us as our graduating fellows deliver special case reviews and presentations of their work and research investigations to their peers and attending surgeons. Our guest speaker, Dr. Barrett, will also deliver a presentation on “Total Knee Arthroplasty Alignment, Robots and Lesson Learned”

  1. Assess the evolution of TKA design and surgical techniques over the last four decades
  2. Appreciate the role of anatomix shoulder arthroplasty in the treatment of glenohumeral arthritis with a B2 glenoid
  3. Theorize use of textured plates to improve fusion rates in multilevel ACDF
  4. Recognize how needle barbotage of rotator cuff tendinitis is performed and the outcomes of the procedure
  5. Identify the role of friction in stability of fracture fixation
  6. Identify the steps and protocols necessary to ensure safe elective orthopedic surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic
  7. Assess the cost savings associated with outpatient arthroplasty vs. inpatient
