Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship

GOAL

The goal of the Sports Medicine Fellowship at Hoag Orthopedic Institute is to train up to two board eligible orthopaedic surgeons in the basic science, research, clinical, surgical, and rehabilitative techniques as it pertains to the field of sports medicine. The fellows will be educated to be able to handle difficult and complicated sports medicine cases, both operatively and nonoperatively, and have a background in the treatment of unique problems related to high level athletic activities.

TEAM COVERAGE AND TRAINING ROOMS

The fellows will participate in the care of professional, collegiate, and high school athletes. The Hoag Orthopedics faculty serve as team physicians for professional NFL team the Los Angeles Chargers, the USA Olympic Volleyball, Diving, and Gymnastics teams. As well as, Cal State Fullerton, Chapman University, Santa Ana College, University of California, Irvine, Vanguard University, and more than ten local private and public high schools. The faculty also have clinical affiliations with six additional colleges and universities. The fellows have access to training and locker rooms, and are typically allowed to make the first evaluation and review findings with the team physician, who is also in attendance.

SCHEDULE, CALL & COVERAGE

The fellow rotation schedule is broken into four 12-week blocks. During each block, the Fellow will be paired with one Attending for six weeks, then another. This rotation schedule allows for concentrated clinical and surgical experience with each faculty. The fellow will spend up to two days in the clinic and up to three days in the operating room. Every surgical case is performed one-on-one with the teaching faculty. The fellow takes no call. Currently, the faculty to fellow ratio is 12:1.

RESEARCH

Fellows are responsible for completing at least one research project during their year. One half to one full day per week is allotted for protected research time. The fellows have access to a team of three clinical research coordinators, one clinical research assistant, one clinical data coordinator, and a statistician to assist them with their research needs. The fellows are expected achieve the goal of presenting their abstracts at a national meeting and ultimately publication in a peer reviewed orthopaedic journal. Fellows will present their research at a symposium held by Hoag Orthopedics at the end of the year.

  • Core Curriculum Lecture – Every Friday
  • Journal Club – 2nd Monday of the month
  • Research Conference – 1st Friday of every month
  • Grand Rounds – 2nd Friday of every month
  • Morbidity & Mortality Conference – 3rd Friday of every month

SALARY, VACATION, AND TRAVEL

Fellows are paid at the PGY-6 level including benefits, and receive two weeks of paid vacation. In addition, travel accommodations and reimbursements are granted for the Fellow to attend either the AAOS or AOSSM annual meetings.

ACCREDITATION

The Hoag Orthopedic Institute Sports Medicine Fellowship program is ACGME accredited.

There are two (2) positions available for the 2025-2026 fellowship year.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Hoag Orthopedic Institute's Sports Medicine Fellowship Program participates in the San Francisco Match Program. Applicants must complete a residency in orthopedic surgery at an ACGME accredited program. The deadline for completing the application process for our program is October 8th, 2023 via SF Match. Applicant profiles that do not contain an AAMC I.D number will not be eligible for review. Invitations to interview will be sent out to selected applicants upon review of all applications. Applicants must be eligible to obtain an unrestricted California Medical License prior to the start of Fellowship for credentialing purposes.
